Rutherfordton will forever remember the place as the Intermediate 50/70 Little League South Regionals Champions from Rutherfordton are there this week. Last week, Rutherfordton (11-13 age) captured the South Region in Tennessee and go for the World Series title just east of San Francisco this week at Max Baer Park. It's the first time that a North Carolina District One team has ever made it to a Little League World Series and this is a once an a lifetime experience for the kids, parents and community. I hope that Rutherford County will follow them this week. Their first game was Wednesday at 3pm and they play again Thursday or Friday at 3pm depending on whether they win or lose the first game. You can do so by tracking the live scoring or find the results at this website: http://www.littleleague.org/worldseries/series/5070/qualify/ worldseries.htm Speaking of baseball, the Atlanta Braves are having a great year, but usually the second half of the season doesn't go as well as the first. Could losing Tim Hudson for the rest of the season be a sign? Hudson, who is just 8-7 on the year has stated 21 games and got a no-decision in six of them. Hudson broke his ankle on a play at first base last week and is the fourth Braves pitcher to have season ending surgery this season. Despite the injuries, the good news is that they have won two of their last three series since the All-Star break and have extended their lead to eight game in the N.L. East. They also have B.J. Upton back and should get Jordan Schafer returning in August. Well, it's not the World Cup, but the United States did win the Concacaf Gold Cup this week- end in soccer. Despite some bad refereeing, the U.S did what they set out to do, win the whole thing. Even without their coach and an injured Stuart Holden, they managed to keep focus and show who is best. And who else should win the 20th running of the Brickyard 400 other than an Indiana native. Jeff Gordon (raised in Indiana) won the inaugural event and Ryan Newman finally broke through as a Hoosier in his twelfth attempt. Indiana native, Tony Stewart won the 11th and 13th annual event, making Newman the third to win at his home track. Meanwhile, winning the Brickyard was just as big for Newman as winning the Daytona 500. First of all, it was meaningful, secondly Newman had to beat Jimmie Johnson who faltered on a late pit stop and finished second. Showing that at least Johnson's team is human. Finally, Newman application for a job next season just got a little better with the win. Newman has no ride for next season, but I am sure a car owner will come through as we close out the this season. As "The Chase" becomes another race closer, eighth through 19th is separated by just 45 markers with six races left. If the playoffs were begin now, Jeff Gordon has made his way in without a win at the tenth spot. Tony Stewart and Martin Truex Jr. would nab the last two spots. Defending Cup champ, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray sit 13-15 without a win this season as well. Newman sits 16th in the standings, but would jump to the final Chase spot if he can win this weekend at Pocono. Unless Aric Almirola, Joey Logano and Paul Menard can pick up two wins/a ton of bonus points, they will soon fade out the picture. The three have just 13 bonus points combined between them all season in 20 Nextel Cup events.
