In most cases the presence of blood in the urine is not a sign of a malignancy. But blood in the urine can be the first indication of bladder cancer or kidney cancer. Hematuria can be gross (visible to the Dr. Glover Little eye) or microscopic (only detected by urinalysis.) Some individuals have microscopic hematuria that is constantly present and not due to infection, kidney stones, injury or malignancy. Often, there are no symptoms of hematuria other than discoloration of the urine. Hematuria is confirmed by a urinalysis. If it is caused by urinary tract infection, antibiotics are prescribed and the urine will be tested again after 6 weeks to be sure the hematuria has resolved. If the blood in urine persists after treating the infection, evaluation is necessary. The standard evaulation consists of imaging of the kidneys by CT scan, urine cytlogy and visual inspection of the lining of the bladder with a cystoscope. Rutherford Urology can help if you are suffering from this or other urological disorders.
