PREP RALLY: CLASS 4A | 8.21.2022 44 PREP RALLY 2022 WALDRON BULLDOGS 2021 RECORD 2-7, 1-5 4A-4 Conference COACH Doug Powell RETURNING STARTERS 5 offense, 5 defense KEY PLAYERS QB/CB Matt Brigance (Sr., 5-10, 175), RB Logan Young (Jr., 5-10, 175), RB/DL Steeven Figueroa (Sr., 5-7, 160), WR Peyton Lipham (Sr., 5-7, 135), OL/DL Miguel Triana (Sr., 5-9, 245), OL/LB Leo Lopez (Sr., 5-8, 220), OL Logan Fielding (Sr., 5-9, 180), OL Blake Allen (Sr., 5-10, 225), DL/OL Will Solomon (Sr., 5-10, 245), WR/CB Bryson Barker (Jr., 5-9, 135). THE SKINNY Waldron shifts from the 4A-4 to the 4A-7 Conference this season after missing the playoffs last year. … QB Matt Brigance returns now as a two-year starter with his dual-threat talents. … Team put it all together in wins last year against Atkins and Dover on the road. … Powell loves the continuity he is seeing entering his third season with the program.. … With just six teams in the 4A-7, one conference win is all that is required to make the playoffs. … But because of that, it creates scheduling quirks, as Waldron starts the season with eight scheduled games. … Senior lineman Will Solomon expected to play a big role for the team again. … Leo Lopez will lead the defense from his middle linebacker spot. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "I feel like we are heading in the right direction. You can't turn a program over in just a couple seasons. We are just trying to get a little bit better each year. With rebuilding programs, the mindset is a big part. We have to stay on the same page when things don't go our way. We expect ourselves to be competitive again this year entering a tough new conference." — Doug Powell SCHEDULE Aug. 26 ......Paris Sept. 30 ............ THE SKINNY Gentry, picked third in the 4A-1 coaches' poll, with a winning season this year could have back- to-back winning seasons for the first time in 22 years. … The Pioneers had their season end in the first round of the playoffs with a 21-20 loss to Lamar last fall. … The playoff loss has been a motivating factor for the program in the offseason, as it was so close to its first playoff win since 1995. … QB Chris Bell returns for his senior year after playing the position for the first time last year. … Bell, who missed some time with injuries, passed for 1,049 yards and 12 touchdowns and added 525 yards on the ground with 2 scores. … Team will use multiple quarterbacks again this year with Addison Taylor among others taking snaps. … WR Dillion Jarnagan is coming off a strong track season and looks to show his speed again. … LB Jonathon Corter (all-conference) leads the way on the defense after finishing with 68 tackles with 12 going for a loss last fall. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "Last year was a great year for us. We put together a season we are proud of, but we want to build on it now. We haven't had back-to-back winning seasons in the last century. We haven't hosted a home playoff game since 1998. We feel like we are right there on the edge of those goals. If we can stay healthy, we can make some history. We feel like kids understand what we are trying to do." — Justin Bigham SCHEDULE Aug. 26 ......Westville,Okla. Oct. 7 ......... Robinson. … Lamar fell just short of winning its first conference title since 2008 with a loss to Ozark. … FB/LB Damien Hendrix returns after earning all league honors making a big impact both ways. … Hendrix had 143 carries for 706 yards and 7 touchdowns last year and will be asked to run it even more this season. … On the other side of the ball, Hendrix finished with 53 tackles (16 for a loss) and had 5 sacks. … Warriors will run early and often behind Shayne Hampton, who earned all-conference honors last year. … Jarrett Dalton led Lamar with 89 tackles to go with 4 sacks last year from his linebacker position. … Sophomore Caleb Green, who guided the JV team to a 6-3 finish last year, is the leading candidate to play quarterback. … WR Lane Miller hasn't played football since the 8th grade but has turned heads in practice with his athleticism. THAT'S WHAT HE SAID "Just like Doctor Strange said in the Marvel movies, sometimes there are millions of possibilities and just one outcome where you win. We found the one in a million last year a couple times. What a season. We were often behind at halftime or late in the playoffs. They just had that never-give-up attitude. They found ways to win.
