Lorry W orking on this issue of CityView Magazine brought back several childhood memories. Specifically, it had me thinking about the days many years ago when my mom, my sister and I would get ready for a new school year. Back then, the school didn't provide a list of supplies for parents and students. We were on our own to shop for paper, notebooks, folders, pens and pencils. ere was no hand sanitizer or Clorox wipes. I'm not even sure I had a backpack until I went to college. Now, when parents shop for supplies they have a checklist they can refer to and mark items off as they go through their store of choice and fill a cart or place an online order. But there are some students who need help as the new school year approaches. And there are groups in our community that have been stepping up to fill that need. You'll read about some of them in this month's magazine. Some have been around for years. "You don't know at the time what kind of impact you are making, but to find out later is just inspirational,'' Kevin Brooks told Jami McLaughlin. Brooks and his wife started Gotcha' Back School Kickoff 15 years ago to help area kids with school supplies. is issue also has me thinking about my dad and how he would sometimes go into our living room, open the stereo console, spread a variety of albums on the floor and proceed to play them in no particular order. His collection included albums by Elvis Presley, mostly records from the singer's younger years. I now have several of those albums. Reading our story about Milton Smith — a local musician who was scheduled to tour with Elvis but instead ended up playing at his funeral — and the memories that people shared about e King prompted me to pull out those old LPs and recall the time that I spent with my dad just sitting and listening to music.
