Roland's Dance Studio 910-423-2623 | 310 Hope Mills Road, Fayetteville, NC 28304 | As a young man, Roland Bersch was hired as a dance instructor with a large national chain dance studio. A quick study, he moved up to dance director and was sent around the country to train new staff. He served in the Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars and was stationed at Fort Bragg when he completed his service. He went dancing every chance he got, and the dance floor is where he met his future wife and dance partner, Sunday Taylor. Her father played the clarinet with a local orchestra, and she enjoyed dancing at the events. Together, Roland and Sunday earned the titles of Jitterbug and Mambo champs. They started teaching dance lessons in local businesses and established Roland's Dance Studio in 1962. Their Hope Mills Road location quickly grew into one of the largest independent ballroom and social studios in the Eastern U.S. Many locals may remember other activities that also were held at Roland's throughout the years, including a teen club, cotillion, ballet, martial arts, gymnastics and a modeling school and agency. Their children, 'Little' Sunday and Roland, each started competing in ballroom dance at the age of 5 and were teaching by the time they were 15. They each have a long list of their own accomplishments and have come full circle to carry on the legacy. Roland Sr. passed away in 2020 at the age of 90. Almost everyone from Fayetteville and the surrounding areas knows of someone who learned to dance at Roland's. Roland's Dance Studio is celebrating 60 years. Call 910-423-2623 for lessons that include Latin, ballroom, swing and tango, as well as information about weddings and more.
