Jim joined Eta Zeta Chapter as a freshman aer he had the chance to bond with members through student government involvement. e character of chapter brothers and their ethical behavior convinced Jim that Sigma Nu was the right fraternity for him, and he took pride in upholding the "Gentleman's Code" alongside his brothers. Jim spent a year as Commander of Eta Zeta Chapter, and his experience with the diverse backgrounds of chapter brothers prepared him for a career in politics. "Simply associating with them provided a wealth of experience," he said. "I also served the national fraternity as Regional Consultant in 1972-73, visiting 36 college campuses in the north central part of the United States. at experience of meeting and working with an even greater diversity of individuals deepened my preparedness for politics." Aer earning a bachelor's degree in English and history from Louisiana Tech University in 1971 and continuing his education at LSU, where he obtained a Juris Doctor in 1975, Jim practiced law in his hometown of Leesville, Louisiana, and began working for the Shreveport City Attorney's Office in 1979. He volunteered with Buddy Roemer's congressional campaign in the following year, was then hired by Congressman Roemer as district manager aer the election, and later served as legislative director in Washington, D.C. "In fall 1987, Buddy Roemer was elected Governor of Louisiana, creating an open seat in Louisiana's congressional delegation. I decided to enter the race to fill his unexpired term in Congress," Jim said. Winning the election in April 1988, Jim served in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly 21 years. He won the following 10 elections for the position before stepping down in 2008. He later worked as an equity partner for Capitol Counsel, representing clients like Chevron, General Electric, and American Health Care Association on issues such as tax and healthcare. e Eta Zeta undergraduate experience provided so much for Jim, and he found it crucial to contribute to the chapter's future as an alumnus. "I remember how difficult it was for us in 1970-71 to put together a plan and obtain the financing for a new fraternity house," he mentioned. "I was happy to do my part in making this effort a little easier for the current chapter." Jim recognizes the value of staying connected to Eta Zeta as an alumnus, and he urges fellow alumni brothers who might not realize that value to keep their fraternal bonds strong. Some of Jim's closest friendships spawned from Sigma Nu, all with a common goal to lead daily lives of Love, Truth, and Honor. "Our involvement allows us to stay in touch with some of our contemporaries as well as being able to stay informed on current conditions in Eta Zeta. With alumni providing the benefit of their experience and expertise combined with financial support, the active chapter should be able to maximize its achievement." In his retirement, Jim plays golf with two of his Eta Zeta brothers from college. He also enjoys traveling with his wife, Jana. e couple share a blended family with two sons, Scott and Clark, and a daughter, Colvin.
