"We rely so much on large production farms out west and down south. We're having some difficulties now with the water supplies and were having food chain problems so I think it's important to get kids all across the country involved and to get them into growing smaller farms and supplying the local markets more. "My big thing is to get kids engaged. Things like 4H, get them involved in small farms. My daughter is a teacher. She was involved in getting some of those little garden projects that they have in the schools now. This teaches these kids where food comes from. You'd be surprised how many kids don't know where food comes from. Showing them how it grows and getting them inter- ested is important. Maybe we'll have some more farmers come out of it, too, because farming is just becoming a thing of the past." Brent and Betty Jo are very proud to be the recipient of this year's Farm Family of the Year designation. "We're honored to represent Madison County for the next year but we earned it," he said. "We work hard at what we're doing and we feel very fortunate to get it. I never thought that we would get it but we've invested a lot of time a lot of money into this and we're committed. "Farming is so hard. For vegetables and commercial seedless watermelons, its hard to make a profit from that. In our climate and in our area in North- west Arkansas it's challenging. When you go down to your field in the middle of July you see watermelons bobbing up and down in the water, you know you're gonna have a bad year."
