June 15, 2022 www.DesertMessenger.com 19 In Memoriam DONA THOMPSON Dona Marguerite (Dahlstrom) Thompson, age 94, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the home of her eldest son, Kurt and his wife Leslie (Vander Wegen) in Kirkland, WA where she had lived for just over four years since the death of her hus- band of 67 years, Dick Thompson. Dona was born on March 2, 1928, in Conrad, MT to Francis and Austa (Russell) Dahlstrom. She grew up in Montana, except for two years in Ta- coma. She spent one year in nurses training then worked for the local telephone company. When her family moved to Sandpoint, ID, she would come over on any weekend she could. One of those weekends, she went to a dance in Naples, ID and met Dick. They were married April 14, 1951 and started out living in Montana. They moved to Sandpoint in 1952, where their four children were born. They moved to Richland in 1960 for Dick's job then moved to Shelton in 1969 due to Dick's new job at PUD #3. Dona was actively involved at the Shelton United Methodist Church and in Camp Fire Girls. They were actively involved in the Shelton Yacht Club beginning in the late 70's. She worked part-time at Shelton High School for a few years until Dick's retirement. Once retired, their life- style turned to traveling. They sold their house, bought a motor home and a houseboat. During the colder months, they would head south and got very acquainted with the southern US and Mexico. During the warmer months, they would park their mo- torhome and travel around Puget Sound, Salish Sea and up to Alaska on their houseboat. Some of the greatest memories their grandchildren are the times they spent on that boat with their grandparents. Around 2010, they bought property in Quartzite to settle there. They came up to Washington each summer un- til they sold their boat, parked their motorhome, and became more in- volved in the Quartzsite community. They were involved with the Senior Center, the Ham radio club, the Lu- theran Church, and the Quartzite Im- provement Association. Their home became an entertainment place for many people. As their health started to decline, their participation in these activi- ties became less and less. When Dick died of a heart attack at age 87, Dona moved to Kirkland to live with Kurt and Leslie. Dona was in the progres- sive stages of dementia at the time. After just over four years, her body fi- nally gave out and she graduated this life to be with Jesus and all her family members who had gone before her. She was predeceased by her hus- band Dick, parents Francis and Austa Dahlstrom, brother Roy Dahlstrom, sisters and their husbands Ruth (Del) Mattix and Margie (Wayne) Johnson and son-in-law Ernie Gladsjo. She is survived by their children Kurt and Leslie, Kirkland. Carey and Mary Thompson, Bothell. Carol Gladsjo, Darrington. Keith and Mike Thompson, Phoenix, AZ. Bill and Ann Thompson, Seattle. Grandchildren Sara and Jarrod Durkee, David and Ashley Thompson, Josh and Keiko Thompson, Debbie Thompson and Jamie Krawcizw, Cory and Travis Ho- fland, Kristi and Larry Owens, Gar- rett and Brittany Gladsjo, Gavin and Katie Gladsjo. Great-Grandchildren Madison, Isaac and Ellie Durkee, Airi Thompson, Noah, Anna and Megumi Thompson, Icem and Rivers Gladsjo, Fiona and Gunnar Gladsjo, and nu- merous nieces and nephews. There will be no service but a fam- ily gathering will be held this sum- mer, at which time both Dona's and Dick's ashes will be scattered in one place they loved, Puget Sound. The final EAA Chapter 1144 Western Arizona, Inc. gathering of the season took place on April 9th. Members and spouses came together for a potluck at the Indian Hills Airpark Community Room to enjoy good food and say their goodbyes, wishing everyone well until their safe return in the fall. It was a fun time and enjoyed by 35 or more individuals. Remember back in March when it was learned the US Department of Air Force (DAF) announced plans to expand their training area and lower the airspace usage in MilitaryOperation Areas (MOAs) to 500 feet AGL for use of high speed military aircraft training? At the time, their comment period ended on March 4, 2022. The Indian Hills Air Park administration has received notice that the comment period has been extended until June 3, 2022. To take action, learn more or if you have additional comments to submit, go to www.ArizonaRegionalAirspaceEIS.com and click on the Public Comment Link. The comment period has been extended be- cause of public and stakeholder input received during the initial comment period which ended March 4th. Salome may not be within an MOA, but the Gladden MOA is within two miles of Salome. Seven wilderness areas are home in the Bag- dad/Gladden MOAs. Low flying aircraft will not only have environmental impact on wildlife, but also economic impact on the tourist industry especially for those camping or fishing at Lake Alamo State Park. I encourage you to research this for yourselves. Members of our association believe that low-level jet training exercises in the McMullen Valley will adversely impact recreational aviation in the four air- parks around Salome and Aguila as well as private landing areas. Remember, EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) is open to anyone who is/ was a pilot or has an interest in aircraft. Feel free to contact the President, Tim Steier, 507-525-3068, if you have questions about this organization. Meetings are held the second Saturday of the month from November through April. The next meeting, open to the public, will be November 12, 2022, 1:00 pm, at Indian Hills Airpark. ~ Judie New, 2022 Chapter Secretary EAA Chapter 1144 June update
