Tyler has an argument for being one of the area's most dominant players. Brooke Zolkos was a steady hand on an injury-riddled DeSoto volleyball squad while seniors Mariana Garcia and Ana Buenrostro guided the girls' soccer team. What does the future hold in Arcadia? Expect to see more representation next season from the football team, which has quadrupled its numbers since the end of the 2020 sea- son. Count on the soccer team to be as good, if not better, than this year's amazing crew and don't be surprised if DeSoto's basketball teams and growing track and golf programs get in the act, as well. With a new weight room in place, a boys and girls All-Area weightlifting presence wouldn't be a surprise, either. Everything is looking up after a groundbreaking year at Imagine School. Serena Kohler became the Sharks' first-ever Division I signee when she inked her let- ter of intent to play volleyball at Oral Roberts next fall. Madison Atwood came over from North Port and promptly trashed the girls weightlifting field at the Class 1A state championships. We're talking all classes, not just 1A, folks. She's a rising senior. Nestled in Atwood's shadow was Makayla Waterhouse, who achieved the ultra-rare feat of earning an All-Area nod as seventh-grader. She should be standing squarely in her own spotlight next fall. Then there's senior Wyett Rightmire, who delivered one of the most inspirational moments of the year when he raced back from a devas- tating leg injury to compete at the boys state weightlifting championships. Let's see anyone else lift a combined 530 pounds in the bench and clean-and-jerk less than half a year after snapping a leg in half. Rightmire earned a second-place finish in the traditional event and a third- place medal in the snatch at the Class 1A state meet. Brady Hall represented the Sharks' rising baseball squad on that All-Area team. With six representatives on All-Area teams this school year, Imagine is well on its way to holding its own with the area public schools in the years to come. The Mantas picked up a whopping 78 spots on the 22 Sun Preps All-Area teams announced so far (baseball and softball All-Area teams will be announced this Sunday). Their 42 boys selections are the third- most in the area while the 36 Mantas selected to girls' teams is second only to Venice. The primary reasons for the representation can be traced two exceptional performances by the football, wrestling, vol- leyball and girls soccer teams. The football team recorded the school's first-ever undefeated regular season. The wrestling squad sent a school-record 11 wrestlers to the state meet, led by Lance Schyck, who capped a second consecutive undefeated season with a second straight state title. Volleyball posted its high- est-ever winning percentage while the girls' soccer team, led by Sophia Cherniak's record-breaking season, contin- ued its string of formidable playo campaigns. There was also plenty of success to be found in cross country, tennis, swimming and weightlifting. Tennis stood out for deep postseason runs that saw the boys team reach state while the girls advanced to the regional final. Wait, there's more: Lemon Bay had the area's sec- ond-most, multi-sport selec- tions – Jace Huber, Landon Spanninger, Taylor Orris, Kerri Matson, Kendall Steinert, Ocean Roth, Natalee Brown, Presley Engelauf and Marie L'Abbe all landed on two All- Area teams. The Mantas also boast the second-most coaches nabbing Coach of the Year nods – Pat Auer (volleyball), Katie Cooke (girls soccer), Michael Schyck (wrestling), Seamus McCarthy (boys tennis) and Joe Casale (girls track). Perhaps just as impressive – just one-third of those selec- tions went to seniors, meaning Lemon Bay is bursting at the seams with returning talent for the 2022-23 school year. So while, Lemon Bay bids an All- Area farewell to 13 boys and 10 girls, stars such as Huber, Spanninger, Orris, Matson, Roth, Brown and Engelauf return. Mantas quarterback Trey Rutan comes back, as do swimmer extraordinaire Beckett Koss, wrestlers Chase Alden, Koen Homan, Justin Brady, Miguel Diaz, Logan Kelly, Marcus Lopez and Brycen Holden, tennis players Rosey Lowder, Hunter Andres, Stevie Ethier and Billy Rand, freshman basketball phenom Maya Collins, and girls soccer standouts Jacoby Maldonado, Isabella Ragazzone, Sofia Ferjiani, Sophia Sweiderk and Isabella Swelland.
