"They would show great movies in the cold-air dorm and all the guys would have dates; it was very Midwestern," Doug said. He made many great friends at Indiana Alpha, such as his big brother, Daryl Martz '76, and his two little brothers, Scott Swisher '79 and Kevin Spurlock '80. GIVE AND TAKE SigEp provided many formative experiences for both brothers, and they worked to strengthen it in return. Norm felt in over his head when he became recruitment chairman as a junior, but some older brothers helped teach him best practices. The chapter risked closing if they didn't bring in a big class, so Norm and the brothers worked hard and brought in 40 new members during their first-ever summer recruitment. Norm was elected both chapter president and IFC president the following year. "The leadership skills that I learned as a SigEp have helped me immensely in my career," he said. "Working on a team to accomplish things was critically important. Membership was low in one of Doug's years as well, so the chapter once again worked hard to bring in an enormous pledge class. Doug fondly remembers practicing serenades with the new members, then renting tuxedos and sending them to sing for the sororities. "That single event put Sigma Phi Epsilon back on the map for many years," he said. "I still get choked up when I hear any of the songs those great young men sang." The brotherhood also helped Doug through tragic times, including after he was in a car wreck that killed Michael Miller '75. Two other brothers were severely injured, and Doug luckily had only minor injuries. Don Giacchetti '75 and Sam Rabin '76 in particular supported Doug and his brothers following that traumatic incident. "Sam forced me to get active on campus, which changed my life." Doug joined the staff of Purdue's old yearbook, Debris, and the editor at the time eventually became his wife of these past 43 years. He also became pledge class president, recruitment chairman, and chapter president. LIFELONG BROTHERHOOD SigEp leadership didn't end for either brother after graduating. Norm volunteered on the Indiana Alpha AVC and the fraternity's investment committee; he still serves on both today. He was ultimately elected Grand President in 1997, which was one of the great honors of his life—as was seeing his son Matt join SigEp at the University of Colorado and become chapter president. Doug worked for SigEp after graduation and went on to serve as general counsel for 26 years. "SigEp has always been an important part of my life," he said. PRESERVING OUR HOME Norm recently spent a weekend at Purdue for a basketball game, reuniting with brothers he hadn't seen since graduating. "A rush of memories and the warm glow of brotherhood came back immediately." Doug and Norm joined The Campaign for Indiana Alpha to keep that brotherhood going for generations to come. "Our house at Purdue has a great location, but it is 100 years old and needs to be updated for today's college students," Norm said. "That makes it critical that we raise the funds to do a major renovation." Both brothers' lives were enriched by the friendships and leadership skills they developed in Indiana Alpha, and they want that opportunity to continue for future leaders. "It is easy to give back to the things that have given to us and changed our lives," Norm said. "Sigma Phi Epsilon has given me far more than I could ever give back," Doug added. If you'd like to connect with the Nabhan brothers or ask them about the campaign, you can reach Norm at grprez97@aol.com and Doug at doug.nabhan@gmail.com.
