When looking for places to retire in Venice, my wife Sharon and I were immediately attracted to IslandWalk because of its layout and many activities. Just about every house in IslandWalk overlooks a body of water, and there are lots of walking paths with arched bridges that have an aesthetic appeal as well as encouraging walking and bike riding. We were also attracted to the variety of outdoor activities including the pools, tennis and pickleball that are a prominent part of the community. My wife and I have always been active and felt strongly that sports and other activities should be a large part of retirement life. I recall walking from the pool to the tennis courts during our first visit to IslandWalk, and that excited feeling that this is what we were hoping to find. There's an upbeat feel of IslandWalk that is hard to describe because it's comprised of many things. We loved hearing the background music playing at the pools, seeing so many people out walking, jogging, riding bikes and playing sports or other activities, and all the wildlife. It just felt right for us. Where did you move from? Sharon and I moved to IslandWalk from Lisbon, Maryland. Lisbon is a small, country town in Western Howard County, that's surrounded by farms and centrally located about an hour from Baltimore and Washington, DC. What did you do before you retired? I worked for the Federal Government in the Washington DC area for the bulk of my professional life, and retired as the Deputy Chief Financial Officer of the National Weather Service. Sharon worked as a medical underwrit- er for a large insurance company and then as a contract specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She left work to raise our two boys, then returned to work at a graphics installation company before retiring and moving to IslandWalk. What hobbies do you have? Both Sharon and I enjoy all kinds of sports, but have focused on pickleball since moving to IslandWalk. Since moving to IslandWak, Sharon has served in a leadership position with IslandWalk's Pickleball Activities Group. She has organized several wellness events and fund raisers including a very successful breast cancer awareness fundraiser called "Pickling for a Purpose." I am also an avid pickleball player and enjoy a variety of other activities including building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and working as the scorekeeper for the Atlanta Braves during spring training. In January, I and another IslandWalk resident started a continuing education program at IslandWalk that has presented over 90 classes to date in a variety of topics including history, writing, film, self-help, foreign language and cooking.
