In 2020, the Federal Communica- tions Commission (FCC) received about 14,000 text spam complaints. Knowing how to report spam texts is an effective way to stop this annoy- ing -- and illegal -- activity. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) has designated 7726 (which spells S- P-A-M) as a number for reporting spam texts. Many carriers (including the big four US carri- ers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile) let you report spam messages by forwarding them to 7726. It won't necessarily stop the messages from coming to you right away, but like report- ing spam in Gmail, it'll help them fi lter those messages for everyone in the future. To report a spam message, forward it to 7726 – if you don't have unlimited texting, this will never count against your plan.Or you can report it directly to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Unwanted calls The National Do Not Call Registry was created to stop unwanted sales calls. It's free to register your home or cell phone number. If you've al- ready added your phone number to the Do Not Call Registry and are still getting a lot of unwant- ed calls, odds are the calls are from scammers. How do I add my number to the Registry? Go to DoNotCall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) from the phone you want to register. It's free. If you register your number at DoNotCall.gov, you'll get an email with a link you need to click on within 72 hours to complete your registration. How long will it take for sales calls to stop? Your phone number should show up on the Reg- istry the next day, but it can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop. You can check whether your number is on the Registry at DoNotCall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the number you want to verify. What telemarketers can't do • Telemarketers can't call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in your local time • can't be deceptive or abusive or lie about any terms of their offer • can't ask you to pay with a cash-to-cash wire transfer (ex. Western Union and MoneyGram), by giving the PIN from a cash reload card (ex. MoneyPak and Vanilla Reload), by asking for your bank account information to create a type of check that you never see or sign, called a "re- motely created payment order" What telemarketers can do • Telemarketers must connect their call to a sales representative within two seconds after you answer • must transmit their telephone number and, if possible, their name, to your caller ID service • must tell you right away what seller or charita- ble organization they represent and that the call is a sales call or a charitable solicitation • must disclose all material information about the goods or services they're offering and the terms of the sale • must get your permission to charge you and to use a particular account number https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/national-do- not-call-registry-faqs Getting SPAM texts or calls?
