This month's reading list is brought to us by our friends at the Gentry Public Library. The Gentry Public Library welcomes everyone to join in its summer reading program "Oceans of Possibilities." The program will be held Tuesdays in June from 11:00-noon. The kickoff on June 7th will feature presentations by the Scott Family Amazeum (space is limited, so stop in the library to register). Weekly summer reading program sessions include story times, snacks, and crafts. If you prefer, grab bags will be available for pickup. Along with in-library programming, participants can use Readsquared to track their reading, play puzzles and games, and watch reading related videos. Please call (479) 736-2054 or stop by the library (105 E. Main St., Gentry, AR 72734) for more information. These are just a few of the many "Ocean of Possibility" related books you'll find at Gentry Public Library. Pirate stew By Neil Gaiman (ages 4-7) This whimsical tale features two children whose parents hire a babysitter for the night – only to find that he's no ordinary babysitter, but a ship's cook with a colorful crew of pirate friends. When it's time for the children to eat dinner, the pirates brew up a pot of pirate stew…that will turn those who eat it into pirates, too! Flotsam By David Wiesner (ages 4-7) Winner of the Caldecott Medal in 2007, Flotsam is something of an oddity – a book without any words! It uses beautiful, detailed watercolors to tell the story of an inquisitive young boy on a beach outing. As the boy observes marine wildlife, a massive wave washes an old camera onto shore. When he develops the film inside, he realizes he isn't the first one to find the camera! Oona By Kelly DiPucchio (ages 4-7) Oona, an adventurous mermaid, loves nothing more than diving for treasure with her otter pal Otto. But there is one piece of treasure they can never seem to reach: a beautiful, sparkling crown. This adorable book emphasizes the importance of persevering to reach your goals and appreciating the discoveries you make along the way. Ocean Meets sky By the Fan Brothers (ages 4-7) Finn's late grandfather loved to tell stories of "a place far away where ocean meets sky." To get there, Finn builds a boat that he and his grandfather designed together. After he falls asleep on the boat, he finds himself on a magical journey. It's a poignant meditation on honoring our loved ones after they're gone. the Pout-Pout Fish cleans Up the Ocean By Deborah Diesen (ages 4-7) This rhyming book with colorful drawings features an appealing story with an important message about caring for the environment that is simple enough for young readers to understand. We are Water Protectors By carole Lindstrom (ages 4-7) In this 2021 Caldecott Medal winner, a young indigenous girl's grandmother teaches her about the importance of water. She also shares their tribe's legends about a black snake (in the form of an oil pipeline) that will travel through their village, contaminating the nearby river. This gorgeously illustrated book highlights our interdependent relationship with water, Earth, and each other. there Might Be Lobsters By carolyn crimi (ages 4-7) The charming story of a dog named Sukie, her owner, Eleanor, and Eleanor's stuffed monkey, Chunka Munka, as they take a trip to the beach. Sukie is nervous about all of the things that could go wrong at the beach, especially an encounter with lobsters. But when one of her friends needs her help, Sukie finds the courage to face her fears. Pirates: Dead Men's tales By anne Rooney (ages 8-12 nonfiction) Did pirates really have wooden legs and parrots? Were there any female pirates? Are there still pirates today? The answers to these questions (and more) can be found in this captivating, fact-filled resource that covers the history of piracy, the exploits of famous pirates, and the conditions pirates faced on the high seas. What Was the age of exploration? By catherine Daly (ages 8-12 nonfiction) Take a historical deep dive into the Age of Exploration, a time when explorers sailed the seven seas in search of unfamiliar lands. Includes eye-catching drawings and photographs that bring the historical facts to life. treasure Hunters By James Patterson (ages 8-12 fiction) Bick, Beck, Tommy, and Storm Kidd are just like any normal siblings – except their parents are famous treasure hunters, and they live on a ship that sails all around the world! When their parents go missing in a storm, the remaining Kidds go on an action- packed adventure to complete their parents' unfinished mission. of possibilities www.OfficialKidsMag.com • May 2022 • 27
