Drinking
Water Week is
May 1-7, 2022!
When you turn the faucet on at your home
or school, do you stop and think about what
it takes to get that water there? For most
residents in Northwest Arkansas, water is
taken from Beaver Lake, cleaned and treated
by Beaver Water District, then delivered
to the four cities of Fayetteville, Springdale,
Rogers, and Bentonville. These cities then
distribute the water to homes and businesses
in the area.
That's right! You drink Beaver Lake EVERY
DAY!
Beaver Lake is a man-made reservoir that
was created when a dam was constructed
on the White River. Stopping the flow of the
river allowed for the water to fill in the lower
land areas around the river and establish
Beaver Lake. A lot of very smart people back
in the 1950s knew that having a large drinking
water supply would be needed for Northwest
Arkansas to grow, and boy has it grown! In
the 1970s Beaver Water District provided
about 15 million gallons of water a day to the
four cities; today, that number is about 60
million gallons of water a day!
The next time you turn on the faucet, think
about Beaver Lake! There are miles and miles
of pipe, pumps, and people involved in getting
that clean safe drinking water to your cup.
Celebrate Drinking Water Week by having a
cool glass of water that comes from right here
