Name: Kids Mag 2 x 5" Customer Name: COSMIC CAVERNS Ad Number: 042422NWR0591 6386 Arkansas 21 • Berryville, Arkansas 870-749-2298 www.cosmiccavern.com Open Daily 9-5 Cosmic Ozark Mts. AR Cavern Est. 1845 • Limestone Cave • 64 degrees constant temp • Family holiday adventure As water rich in minerals constantly drips down from the cave ceiling, the minerals harden to form stalactites and stalagmites. Smart Official Kids Mag readers probably already know stalactites point down from the ceiling like fingers, and stalagmites reach upward. These "grow" verrrrrry slowly as the drips continue – maybe less than an inch in 100 years. When they meet in the middle, they form a column. The two spectacular lakes in Cosmic Cavern — the South and North Lakes —are the largest underground lakes in the Ozark Mountains and they're also bottomless. Divers who explored them could never find the bottom! During periods of heavy rainfall, the cavern tends to flood, but fortunately, the water drains quickly — as fast as six inches in an hour. The cave is the warmest in the Ozark region, with a temperature that stays 64° year-round, no matter what time of year you visit. If you are a fourth, fifth or sixth grader, you might want to ask your teacher about taking part in a science program offered at Cosmic Cavern called the Aquifer Study. In the two- hour session, you'll learn to use special instruments to measure things like humidity, evaporation and the amount of rock that's dissolved in water. Tours lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. Be sure to wear boots, cuz you're gonna get muddy! And no matter if it's a hot day or a cold one, the temperature in the cave stays 64° year-round, no matter what time of year you visit. And…the exploration and discoveries just keep on comin' at Cosmic Cavern! Mr. Langhover and professional caving groups are currently digging to find whole new areas. "We don't just do tours. We keep exploring," Mr. Langhover said. Stay tuned! You never know what new mystic wonders await on your next visit to Cosmic Cavern! www.OfficialKidsMag.com • May 2022 • 29
