Page 16 March 28 - April 3, 2022 BY JAY BOBBIN If you like a heavy dose of edge in your Oscar-day movie viewing, it's hard to top "Training Day." AMC offers the 2001 police drama Sunday, March 27, and what immediately sets it apart from most other films in the genre is Denzel Washington's ferocious, Academy Award-honored work as a narcotics detective whose corrupt ways alarm the young officer (Ethan Hawke) he's evaluating for a day. While some of his earlier roles also served notice that Washington (an Oscar nominee again this year) is a performer not averse to taking gambles with his image, "Training Day" really shows the extent to which he's willing to go. In tandem with director Antoine Fuqua, with whom he would work again on the two "Equalizer" movies, Washington created what endures as one of the most unforgettable characters in his repertoire.
