Page 16 March 21 - 27, 2022 BY GEORGE DICKIE As television producers go, Steven Bochco was arguably the "It" boy of the 1980s and '90s, turning out a steady stream of critically acclaimed, much-decorated series that stand today as landmarks in TV history. Few did the hourlong "dramedy" better than Bochco and probably his signature production was "Hill Street Blues." Airing on NBC from 1981-87, it followed the adventures of staffers at a police precinct in a decaying, crime-ridden neighborhood of an unnamed East Coast city. It starred Daniel J. Travanti as its head man, Capt. Frank Furillo, a soft-spoken yet strong-willed man who patiently dealt with the sleazy characters in his precinct. So did the cops in his command, who were played by Bruce Weitz, Michael Warren, Charles Haid, James B. Sikking, Kiel Martin and others. And each episode began with the 7 a.m. roll call that would wrap up with Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (Michael Conrad) reminding his comrades to "be careful out there." The unusual mix of comedy and drama was a hit with fans and critics alike and made the series a regular during awards season, among the honors a since-tied record of four Emmys for outstanding drama series. Viewers can check out "Hill Street Blues" on Hulu.
