Page 16 March 14 - 20, 2022 BY JAY BOBBIN It would have been notable enough for its reteaming of the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" brigade of Paul Newman, Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill ... but thanks to an immensely clever David S. Ward script and its general appeal, "The Sting" amounts to much more. The best-picture winner of 1973, it's part of Turner Classic Movies' "31 Days of Oscar" month Friday, March 18. The two stars play Depression-era con men bent on getting even with a mobster (a vicious Robert Shaw) who had one of their associates killed. They decide to beat him at his own game by staging a swindle – or "sting" – that involves the elaborate staging of a fake horse race. The film also is a feast of terrific character actors including Charles Durning, Eileen Brennan, Ray Walston and Harold Gould, and Marvin Hamlisch's adaptation of Scott Joplin's ragtime music is irresistible.
