Washington Regional provides clinics throughout Northwest Arkansas Many of us get the urge to clean our homes come springtime. But if you or someone in your house has allergies or asthma, stirring up dust can create problems. "In winter, when most families spend a lot of time indoors, the house can accumulate indoor allergens — dust mites, mold and pet dander," says Dr. Rex Porte of Washington Regional Shiloh Clinic. "Disturbing these allergens when you are cleaning can make things worse for those with allergies or asthma." When tackling spring cleaning, Dr. Porte says, it's important to keep allergens in mind. The nonprofit Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America offers these tips for spring cleaning to reduce allergy symptoms: • First, remove clutter in any room you plan to clean. • Remove dust on and behind furniture, light fixtures and shelves. Use a microfiber cloth or dust cloth specially designed to trap allergens. • Remove dust on electronics and ceiling fans. Use a pillowcase to clean dust from ceiling fan blades so the dust goes inside the case. Take the pillowcase outside to shake dust from it; wash the pillowcase. • Vacuum/mop under all furniture. • Vacuum furniture upholstery and mattresses. • Replace bed pillows more than two years old. • Consider using allergen-barrier covers for mattresses and bed pillows. • Wash curtains and rugs in water 130°F or hotter. • Replace air filters. • Have carpet cleaned with an allergy- friendly method. Kitchens, bathrooms and other wet areas need special attention: • Check for water leaks and make necessary repairs. • Check for and clean any mold. Inspect sinks, cabinets, produce bins, trash cans, refrigerator seals and shower curtains. • Remove dust from exhaust fans and tops of cabinets. • Remove throw rugs and use non-slip towels that are washed regularly instead. Look for cleaning products formulated for allergy sufferers; choose fragrance-free items when possible. Once you have completed your spring cleaning, resist the urge to air out the house. "Wait to open your windows until after springtime pollen has done its thing," Dr. Porte says. "Otherwise, you're allowing outdoor allergens inside." Dr. Porte recommends talking with a primary care provider if you or a household member struggles with allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing or itching. "Treatment typically begins with allergen avoidance when possible, as well as medication," Dr. Porte says. "For persistent symptoms, immunotherapy and asthma evaluation may be considered."
