54 March 2022 T he Woman›s Club of Fayetteville was founded on Nov. 6, 1906, as the Civic Improvement Association. It was not until 1920 that it was renamed e Woman›s Club. It is located in Fayetteville's Heritage Square, and the club is dedicated to its restoration and preservation. From 1941-1945 e Woman›s Club of Fayetteville rented apartments in the upstairs section of the Sandford House to unmarried working women who came to Fayetteville as a result of World War II. Aer the war, e Woman›s Club continued to rent apartments to women who worked in Fayetteville and at nearby Fort Bragg. e Fayetteville Woman's Club has owned and maintained the Sandford House, the Oval Ballroom and the Baker-Haigh-Nimocks House on Dick Street since 1945. ese buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. e Woman's Club founded the first library in Cumberland County, and it was on the top floor of the historic Market House. On March 1, 2016, e Fayetteville Woman's Club's name was changed to Heritage Square Historical Society of North Carolina Inc. e current president is Lynda Faircloth Deaton, who is dedicated to the preservation of historic landmarks in Fayetteville. Another dedicated member was Elaine Kennebeck, who served as president of e Woman's Club from 2014-2020. Four past officers of the club are pictured in front of a painting by the late Elliott Daingerfield, who once lived in the Sandford House. The Baker-Haigh-Nimocks House on Dick Street was constructed in 1804. Below, the freestanding Oval Ballroom at Heritage Square was built in 1818.
