Page 16 February 21 - 27, 2022 BY GEORGE DICKIE Anyone old enough to remember will tell you TV has changed a lot since the 1970s. There was no streaming, cable was still at least a decade away from emerging as a viable force and the "Big Three" networks of ABC, CBS and NBC had a stranglehold on viewership. Fox at that point was still in the idea stage. It was during these times that a show like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" flourished. Airing as part of CBS' Saturday blockbuster lineup of socially relevant comedies, it put local TV news in the spotlight through the misadventurers of the staff of Minneapolis' WJM-TV and its bumbling anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight), hard-nosed executive producer Lou Grant (Ed Asner), acerbic head writer Murray Slaughter (Gavin McLeod) and assistant producer Mary Richards (Moore), who kept them all on the same page. True, this was merely the backdrop for the real story, which was the challenges faced by the single working woman in a man's world. But there was plenty of comedy to be mined from the Herculean task of putting a live newscast on the air every night.
