by Randy Rice - MCDONALD COUNTY DIRECTORY Nestled among the beautiful Ozark mountains, Outlaw Ridge is the dream child of retired chaplain C.J. Malone and his wife, Donise, who were looking to operate some kind of business in their golden years. "We wanted to do something, create something where people could just experience a little fun, get away from the stress of everyday life and decompress," C.J. said. "The idea of the sports shooting area really fit that model." It just so happened that the Malones already had the perfect location, a 38-acre parcel of land that had good access off of the interstate. "One day I was on our property walking along this 1600-foot-long ridge that overlooks a very picturesque valley," C.J. said. "It had a nice path along the edge and it came to me that I could put some launchers up and people would have a blast shooting clay that sailed out over that valley." Since their property was literally on Jesse James Rd. in Pineville, the name Outlaw Ridge seemed appropriate for their new sports shooting establishment. "There's nothing really available right now unless you're on your own property," C.J. said. "There is a skeet range in Gravette, there's a target range in Bella Vista, and then there's a Gunsmoke Sporting Clays in Garfield. But we are different than all of them in that we offer a combination sporting clay course with a competition shootout, pistol range, rifle range, and event space." Outlaw Ridge, a member of the National Association of Sporting Clays, features nine stations from which to shoot clays launched from the ridge through the trees out over the valley. Atlas throwers are utilized, which offer patterned and wobble varieties. "We have automated launchers to shoot off singles, or doubles, or wobblers that all help to challenge the shooter," C.J. noted. "This gives the customer an experience that parallels actual hunting. Golf carts are available to take you from station to station with ease or you can enjoy the scenic half- mile walk round trip." In true outlaw fashion, they also offer a two-person shootout, an automated event that will challenge the best shooters. Twelve clays are launched for each shooter and the challenge is on. Some may want the shootout only or include the shootout as part of their total experience. Lastly, Outlaw Ridge has a covered and shaded pistol range nestled in the valley with two shooting stations that can accommodate four shooters and quality metal targets. It also has body targets at seven yards for those qualifying for concealed carry. Donise runs the Outlaw Ridge Pro Shop where you can browse their selection of apparel and souvenirs to remember your unique shooting experience. Outlaw Ridge has plenty of outdoor tent space to accommodate groups and can also provide an indoor conference room with projection, wifi, tables and chairs to accomodate your needs. "We were only open half of the season in 2021 because we launched Outlaw Ridge in July," C.J. pointed out. "But we had a huge response and were very pleased with the people who came out. We welcome all sorts of folks, people from all walks of life. We love to meet new people, hear their stories and listen to them laugh about their scores."
