But have you sampled McKeever Mountain Farms' "Offensive" salsa? Why would you want to? Surprisingly, LaSandra McKeever, who with her husband Luap owns the organic farm situated on one of Ozark's highest mountains, says the hot Offensive is her best salsa seller. "It is fresh, tastes great, and has a funny label that markets itself." (The label reads "Hot and chunky, just like your mom.") Other salsa flavors are mild, medium, hot and hot garlic. "My favorite jelly is Honeysuckle. It tastes like that little droplet of dew from inside the flower and you don't have to work so hard to get the flavor." Another best seller is Cowboy Candy – candied jalapeno relish in a jar. The McKeevers founded their 20-acre farm in Seligman, Mo. in 2016. "It started as a hobby farm with organic vegetables to use in our jellies, jams and salsa." But one of her customers, whose child was battling neuroblastoma, was very careful about what was brought into her home. "That was a great practice for us as well. Pesticides are harmful to our bodies, pets, livestock and the planet." As word spread of the tasty, healthy, pesticide-free food, the McKeevers increased their garden and product offerings. "In 2019 we added honeybees, hives and raw honey." They also grow heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and okra and other vegetables. "Last season we added lemon balm and lavender. This season we'll add mint to the mix." LaSandra said that fruits and flowers are used in the jelly and salsa, or dried for use as seasonings. Flowers are for tea and bath items as well as decor. A visit to the farm's Facebook page will leave you drooling. You can order custom birthday cakes like chocolate with an M&M candy core, and a banana cream, toasted coconut, salted caramel ganache. Or try orange Dreamsicle cheesecake bites, salted caramel mousse cups or vanilla raisin pear sauce. But there's more besides food. For sunburn, diaper rash, eczema, poison ivy and other skin conditions, relief comes in a little pot called Plantain Salve. LaSandra explained the special features of McKeever Mountain that make growing their vegetables, fruits and flowers ideal. The mountain is 1,326 feet above sea level where the soil is favorable for produce grown from seeds. "One side of the farm is acidic" and good for vegetable crops. The other side is alkaline and good for growing fruit. "It's covered in huckleberries, gooseberries, dewberries and blackberries. We're on a very high elevation that gets lots of sunshine, and we're surrounded by wildflowers, natural herbs, white oak and cedar trees. We utilize and incorporate our natural surroundings whenever possible." The McKeevers have no employees but manage the farm together. They market their products through Facebook, the farmers market in Mountain, Missouri, and the Jane Store in nearby Jane. In October, McKeever Mountain Farms teams up with Sims Corner Church to host a free and family-friendly autumn festival called Mountain Happenings at Sims Corner in Pineville. Hayrides, a puppet show, carnival rides, a free barbecue dinner by Cowboy Catering, and other fun activities were part of last year's festival. "Back in the day, in the old days, people got together. There were community picnics," LaSandra said. "Throughout the years, the area has a great history of bringing people together." Cowboy Candy, Salsa, Jams and Jellies Are Organic Farm Specialties
