Page 16 February 7 - 13, 2022 BY GEORGE DICKIE It struggled ratings-wise and dodged cancellation more than once but one could argue that one of the best medical dramas of the last 40 years was "St. Elsewhere." Created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey and airing on NBC from 1982-88, the hourlong dramedy followed the goings-on at St. Eligius Hospital, a rundown South Boston hospital dubbed "St. Elsewhere" – medical slang for a place where patients are sent when they're turned away from more prestigious institutions. The show featured a large ensemble cast headed by Ed Flanders, William Daniels, Ed Begley Jr., Christina Pickles and Norman Lloyd and mixed medical drama and tender moments of humanity with a substantial number of comedic moments, inside jokes and references to television history. Fans ate it up as did critics, and it was a fixture during awards season for its entire run, winning 13 Emmys. Viewers with a Hulu subscription can stream all six seasons of "St. Elsewhere."
