Page 16 January 24 - 30, 2022 BY GEORGE DICKIE Long before there was "Must See TV" and appointment viewing, there was "The NBC Mystery Movie." Airing Sunday and Wednesday nights from 1971 to 1977, this anthology was composed of feature-length installments of rotating detective series. Among them were "Columbo," starring Peter Falk as an LAPD homicide detective whose unassuming exterior belied a shrewdness; "McMillan & Wife," casting Rock Hudson as a 50-ish San Francisco police commissioner and Susan Saint James as his 20-something spouse; and "McCloud," with Dennis Weaver as a small-town New Mexico deputy marshal on loan to the NYPD. Probably the most enduring of these was "Columbo." Spanning the length of the NBC anthology and later the ABC iteration from 1989 to 2003, the character became Falk's signature role, garnering him four Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and a boatload of other laurels. The image of Columbo in his rumpled beige trench coat with his half-smoked cigar asking his suspect "Just one more thing ..." endures to this day with those of a certain age.
