She most recently served as the executive editor at The Fayetteville Observer, the first woman to hold that position. She served in a number of other editing and reporting jobs on numerous beats at the Observer. A native of Cumberland County, she has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He spent more than 30 years at The Fayetteville Observer, covering news, business, features, sports and government. He most recently worked at the Bladen Journal in Elizabethtown. He covers Fayetteville and education for CityView TODAY. CONTRIBUTORS Greg Barnes | Investigative reporter GregBarnes401@gmail.com Greg Barnes worked as an investigative reporter and editor at The Fayetteville Observer for about 30 years before retiring in 2018. That year, he was named Gatehouse Media's News Writer of the Year. A year earlier, Gatehouse named him Beat Reporter of the Year. He most recently worked as a freelance reporter for three years at NC Health News, where he wrote extensively on contaminated drinking water and other environmental health issues. Jason Canady | Reporter jcanady@cityviewnc.com Jason Canady is an award-winning writer from Fayetteville. He has written for CityView Magazine and most recently worked in the University Relations Department at Methodist University. He covers Hope Mills government for CityView TODAY. Bill Kirby Jr. | Columnist billkirby49@gmail.com Bill Kirby Jr. is a veteran journalist who spent 49 years as a newspaper editor, reporter and columnist covering Fayetteville, Cumberland County and the Cape Fear Region for The Fayetteville Observer. He most recently has written for CityView Magazine. Jami McLaughlin | Reporter jmclaughlin@cityviewnc.com Jami McLaughlin writes about Spring Lake for CityView TODAY. She is a freelance multimedia journalist with deep family roots in Spring Lake and in Cumberland County. She has written for the Greater Fayetteville Business Journal, Up & Coming Weekly and The Fayetteville Observer and has written the blog Fayetteville Area Mom on the Go since 2018. She served as the mayor pro tem and a Spring Lake alderman from 2003-2007. She is a graduate of East Carolina University, where she received a bachelor's degree in communications, and Central Michigan University, where she earned a master's degree in administration. Keyona Smith | Reporter ksmith@cityviewnc.com Keyona Smith covers Cumberland County government for CityView TODAY. She is a freelance multimedia journalist who recently graduated from Fayetteville State University with a bachelor's degree in communications and media studies. As a daughter of a retired veteran and as a current U.S. Army Reserve public affairs specialist, she has a special love for Fayetteville and Fort Bragg. She has contributed to The Fayetteville Observer and the Fayetteville State Broncos Sports Network. This month, we are broadening our scope with a pioneering digital news division, CityView TODAY. Through this initiative, we are expanding our commitment to our readership and to our community. We begin this endeavor after much thought, planning and with the addition of a team of award-winning and seasoned journalists. will lead the news division as editor. She is a native of Cumberland County and has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Williams said she is excited to be part of CityView TODAY. "It's our job to provide information in a fair and balanced manner,'' she said. "We want to give the community access to the news it needs to make informed decisions. Our focus is local government, reporting on elected officials and how their decisions impact our community.'' Among other staff members and contributors are nationally recognized investigative journalist Greg Barnes, veteran columnist Bill Kirby Jr., who is already a contributor to CityView Magazine, and reporter Michael Futch, an esteemed storyteller in his own right.
