By Karen Rice Official Kids Mag This month's kid hero is 10-year-old Lanie N. She's a 5th grader at Gentry Intermediate School, where her favorite subject is Social Studies. She has one older brother and one older sister and lives on a farm with rabbits, dogs, horses and goats. She loves playing with her rabbits and riding her horse in Playday events. She's also been a member of the Bloomfield 4-H Club for 5 years. Lanie has done a lot of community service projects with her 4-H Club. Last year, in 2021, the club challenged its members to do one service project every month. Lanie was all over that challenge. "Since I like doing it (community service,) I thought about how easy it would be." she said. Lanie explained why she likes doing community service, "It makes me happy knowing that maybe I made a difference to someone. It's the right thing to do and it shows that you care about them." Lanie had no problem coming up with a year's worth of projects, and says it's easy for kids to do. "There is a challenge for each month or you can choose one of your own. Our club also does local service projects too," she added. Where to get ideas for projects? "Ask around and ask your parents or teachers to be aware of what's going on around you," she suggests. "Mention to other kids what you are doing and ask them if they would like to help." "It's a good thing because you get to help people or animals," she continued. "We should always want to help others." Lanie loves being in 4-H and her favorite thing is "the people and the activities that we do. We are always learning something new and learning skills that will help us when we are grown ups." Take the kindness challenge for 2022! Do a service project (or lots of them!), help your community, and tell us about it! We'll feature you in a future issue of Official Kids Mag!
