Page 2 the sophon Fall 2021 (Continued from page 1) I t's been a fantastic fall semester at the University of Michigan. We were thrilled to return to in-person classes and have the sophomores experience everything that our college has to offer. Football had a solid season, social and philanthropic events are back in full swing, and our newest members are finally seeing how great this school really is. Unfortunately, U of M did not yet reinstate fall recruitment, and we are unable to take new members until the winter; we look forward to updating you on our progress in the next issue. Still, the brotherhood has been stronger than ever. A great bond exists between upper and lower classmen, and our seniors have been instrumental at securing internships for their younger brothers. Not to mention, our GPA as a chapter still sits at a 3.5, making us one of the top academic fraternities on campus. Philanthropy is off the charts as well! We raised over $3,000 for Mud Bowl, and Mazeed Oluewu '21 has continued his work with MyTown Support. Mazeed created this fund to help students of color in the greater Chicago area afford secondary education, and it has already raised $30,000. He has shown so much passion for this cause, and we are so proud of his efforts to help people from his hometown. In November, we partnered with Alpha Phi on a new philanthropy event called Hot Diggity Dog. Both groups held their own hot dog eating contests, raising money for C.S Mott Children Hospital. We look forward to hosting even more events for a good cause and have the utmost confidence in Philanthropy Chairman Langston Sholl '20 in planning for next semester. November 5 was Parents Day at Michigan Alpha, and it was truly a joy to welcome our families to the chapter house once more. We look forward to Founders' Day next February. Until then, I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Go Blue! In the bond, Andrew Maccagnone '20 Chapter Vice President Michigan Alpha Ends the Fall Strong Looking Back on a Better Year Experience and Connections Phil started reading The Wall Street Journal in college, which helped guide him toward pursuing a career in business or finance. He worked with large banks for over 20 years, gaining experience and contracts in Chicago and around the nation. He wanted to move on to something more entrepreneurial, so after creating a business plan, he took a leap of faith and founded Rush Street Capital in 2014. Phil has served as managing partner at the Chicago-based firm, which provides capital and advisory services to lower and middle market private equity firms, ever since. Phil's advice to active brothers and young alumni is to prioritize networking in their professional lives. "It's an overused term but an essential skill to learn," he said. "Someday, the young people that you meet will be running companies and will be in positions of influence. You will be very glad that you stayed in contact with them in future years." Devotion to Our Brothers Last year, Phil made a generous donation to the Michigan Alpha annual campaign in memory of the late Michael Etzioni '87. "Mike was a true friend and embodied everything that we look for in a brother," Phil said of his friend. "I received some of the most important life lessons from Mike, and I strive to be like him every day that I'm alive. He was one of the most reliable and consistent human beings that I have ever met." It's important to Phil that the chapter receives continued alumni support to thrive on campus. "Alumni supported us when I was an undergrad, and we should all try to support the chapter now—each in our own unique way." Phil keeps up with several brothers from his undergraduate years on a regular basis. When he's not working, he loves to sing and play music (especially guitar), enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with his three kids. Phil can be reached at philkain@rushstreetcapital.com. The winter 2020 pledge class moving into their new auxiliary house on Hill Street last year. Members gather outside of auxiliary house prior to the first day of school. New members outside of 630 Oxford chapter house. The winter 2021 pledge class enjoys a group trip to Harbor Springs, Michigan. A Thriving, Authentic Brotherhood
