Wade Byrd banded to- gether with hundreds of lawyers around the country with one mission: To repre- sent the families of the victims without any compensation. Over 1,745 claimants recovered $22 billion due to these free services. Providing free legal services in spe- cial circumstances has been one hall- mark of Byrd's law practice. With over 45 years of experience and after leav- ing the Cumberland County District At- torney's office in 1977, Byrd's calling has been handling and trying cases involving catastrophic injuries and wrongful death due to negligence. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in North Carolina, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Byrd has received numerous honors over the years, most recently the War Horse Award from the Southern Trial Lawyers, one of only three North Carolina attor- neys to receive the award. He is a past president of the North Carolina Advo- cates for Justice and received the Walter Clark Award, their highest recognition. Byrd is a Fellow of the International So- ciety of Barristers; Fellow of the Ameri- can College of Trial Lawyers (one of three lawyers from Fayetteville invited, along with the late Hal Broadfoot Sr. and Walker Y. Worth Jr. These awards and invitations to become a Fellow are given in recogni- tion of extraordinary contributions to the cause of justice, including the teaching of trial advocacy in North Carolina and around the country. Byrd has served as president of the Fay- etteville Kiwanis Club (recognized as an "Outstanding President" by Kiwanis In- ternational). A past president of the Fay- etteville Academy Board of Trustees; has served as president of the Wake For- est Law School Alumnae Associa- tion; and as an elder at First Presbyterian Church where he sings in the choir along with his wife Daina.
