11 PLACES TO BE OUT AND ABOUT Venetian Waterway Park The trail is 5.5 miles on either side of the Intracoastal Waterway. Vickie Strumpf walks her dog Enzo, front, and Turbo, a neighbor's dog, back, recently. Both are Italian greyhounds. (Strumpf gives treats to this reporter's dog, Mila, when Mila obeys commands to sit.) Enzo, Mila and Lydia Rodriguez's dog, Max, typically play on the trail near Gold Rush BBQ. Mila also likes to play with Luna, a Snowdog (owned by a Snowbird) she greets on the trail. Lake Venice Golf Club opened in 1959 as only the second golf course in the county. More than 60 years later there's an award- winning golf course (27 holes) that's open to the public. You can walk or ride at any time, as they do not take tee times. Walk 18 holes for only $33. PHOTO BY ED SCOTT Outdoor dining at Brewburgers Big changes are afoot at Venice Shopping Plaza on Venice Island. Brewburgers is now Brew-Za-Burgers. The vacant restaurant space on the southern end of the shopping center will be another Brewburgers entity, sometime in early 2022. More on that later. For now, anyone seeking traditional Brewburgers fare can still go to the restaurant at 370 Commercial Court and dine al fresco. Here employee Brooke DePuy carries a mug of Brewburgers brew. PHOTO BY ED SCOTT Staff Report During the 80+ weeks since the coronavirus pandemic began we've learned a lot about being outdoors and we've begun to appreciate what it has to offer. Here are 11 things you can do to be outdoors and enjoy Venice: Venice Jetties A boat motors through the Venice Jetties. According to the city's website, venicegov. com, the jetties were constructed and the channel between them was dredged in 1937. The South Jetty is in the city of Venice; the North Jetty is in Nokomis and under the jurisdiction of Sarasota County. Humphris Park is the entrance to the South Jetty. It is named for Thomas H. Humphris, who was mayor of Venice from 1972-73. PHOTO BY TOM O'NEILL DISCOVER VENICE 2021-2022 8
