All the finishes throughout the building were updated, including the floors, cabinets and wall paint. The original finishes were multiple shades of purple, so this was important to bring the building up to current design standards. The building's main hallway now features large historic photographs of city parks and infrastructure on canvas, installed by the Historical Resources staff, giving the area a gallery look. The facility's main lunchroom, with multiple refrigerators, modern appliances, comfortable uniform seating and vinyl plank flooring, is a clean and bright place for staff to eat lunch. Staff working outside in the heat can access water and ice at several "hydration stations" placed at entry/ exit points. The old holding cells of the former police station were not removed; instead, they are used for storage. The original conference table from the police station was a bright teal color with black edges. Public Works decided to build a replacement table using reclaimed lumber and scrap steel from their previous facility. Staff performed the careful demolition of an old pole barn and salvaged the original lumber beams. They treated this lumber for pests and then worked together to fabricate the table top by joining the beams together. The table legs were fabricated using scrap steel from the Solid Waste division welding shop. This unique conference table only cost about $200 in supplies to construct. More importantly, it is a great reminder of where Public Works has come from as a department. A pre-engineered, 8,000-square-foot metal building added to the back of the campus is used to store Parks and Maintenance heavy equipment. (This space was previously used by police to keep evidence vehicles.) This is important equipment used not only to perform regular maintenance throughout the city, but also for emergency response during tropical events. Vehicles include a front-end loader, back-hoe excavator, mini-excavator, claw truck, bucket truck, vacuum truck, skid steer and mowers. Previously this equipment was kept outside in the Florida sun. Signage in front of the facility and mirrored inside contains graphics of interlocking gears, something James Clinch, director of public works and asset management, said is a metaphor for the department. "Just think about a single gear; it doesn't do a lot – it spins around," he said. "But if we all work together and become a well-oiled machine, we can do some amazing things." By allowing public works staff to perform so much work personally on the building, they have genuinely invested into the finished product, according to a city release. They truly take pride in this new facility, knowing they have personally contributed to the renovation project and now have a building they can be proud of. 2021-2022 DISCOVER VENICE 13
