March
The name Aquamarine in Latin for sea water,
and is an accurate description of the beautiful
greenish-blue hue of this prized gemstone.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of
March and a member of the beryl family of
gemstones, related to Emerald and Morganite.
For thousands of years aquamarine has been asso-
ciated with the ocean. Regarded Greek philoso-
pher, Pliny the Elder, believed aquamarine was a
gift from mermaids. It was believed to protect
sailors from the perils of the sea, minimize sea
sickness and calm stormy waters. During medi-
eval times it was used to reawaken the love of
married couples, and believed to absorb the
passion of young love to make it last through out
the years. Because of this, aquamarine makes an
excellent wedding gift for new couples.
If you ever find yourself in need of a lawyer, grab an
aquamarine, the gemstone is said to bring victory in
battle or legal pursuits. Aquamarine was also
thought to be the most powerful type of crystal ball
when used during a full moon and was a key
component in medieval Ouija boards. Worried
someone might be trying to poison you? Wear an
aquamarine, during the middle ages it was believed
to be a powerful antidote. For this reason, aquama-
rine was a favorite of royalty and used in many
crown jewels. And if you ever feel like your aquama-
rine is losing some of its power submerge it in a bowl
of water and all will be restored.
