He and his wife, Cynthia, were married for over 50 years with five children. He was faithful to his family, his beliefs, and his values. He earned a degree in pharmacy and followed the path of a businessman. Terry and Cynthia owned two pharmacies in Kansas: Northside Family Health Mart and Valley Falls Pharmacy. Beyond pharmacy, he was an investment broker and owned rental properties. He had countless aspirations in his lifetime, including running for Congress in Missouri in 1980. Above all, his family was his core; spending time with his children, grandchildren, and traveling with his wife were his favorite pastimes. He will be greatly missed by many. No Looking Back Carl Johnson '64 Makes a Believer Out of His Beta Brother C arl Johnson '64 knew he had his work cut out for him in Purdue's renowned engineering program, but aer strictly focusing on his studies for most of his freshman year, he realized that he could succeed academically while still allowing time for other campus activities he was interested in. What's more, Carl had some added motivation beyond meeting his own academic goals. His older brother, who went to the University of Kansas and was four years ahead of him, didn't think he could Boiler Up and make grades in one of the best engineering schools in the nation. Carl not only made a believer out of his brother but followed in his footsteps by joining Beta eta Pi. "By late in the spring of 1961, I had learned that I could do well academically, show my brother wrong, and maybe have a campus-life experience to boot," Carl said. "Being a Beta legacy, I visited the Beta house a few times, liked what I saw, enjoyed the young men that I met, went through spring recruitment, pledged Beta, and never looked back." Carl is thankful he was part of a great pledge class that was committed to balancing academic performance, interfraternity athletic excellence, campus involvement, brotherhood development, and quality social-life happenings. He learned that he could find something to like and respect about every brother, even if they disagreed on some issues. Most of all, Carl learned that teamwork was vital to having a great Fraternity experience. "I served in some lesser roles as a junior and then as Chapter president during the fall semester of my senior year," Carl said. "at was a fantastic experience which taught me how much I liked being in a leadership role with a group of guys that really wanted to perform at a high level." A few of Carl's favorite Beta Mu memories include playing on the Chapter's fastpitch soball team, which compiled a 25-1 record during his junior and senior years, winning the interfraternity athletics championship, and the Beta Hack—a well-used, baby pink and baby blue school bus with the top cut out. Carl will never forget using the Hack during the campaign for Kyle Fink '65 to become junior class president. "We positioned the Hack at a well-traveled student crosswalk and, during the 10-minute breaks between periods, we had a rock band on the sidewalk, a bunch of brothers jumping up and down in the Hack, and Kyle and friends dancing with the girls walking by," Carl said. "at was truly unique and unbelievably fun!" Carl hasn't stayed in touch with as many of his Beta Mu brothers as he'd have liked to, due in part to living in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Kansas since graduation and spending a lot of time overseas (primarily on business), but the times when he has reconnected have been cherished. Beta's principles led Carl to personally satisfying levels of learning and success during his career. He was one of two co-founders of II-VI Incorporated at age 29, served as the company's principal executive officer for 36 years, served as its board chairman for 27 years, and continues now—aer 50 years—as a consultant. Amidst Carl's career achievements, family has been a priority. Having a wife, children, and grandchildren to love, cherish, help, and share with the world has helped him to feel complete. Of course, the motivation from his Beta brother, even some 60-plus years later, is a nice reminder of how much his family, Beta, and hard work have meant to him.
