He played throughout high school with his friend, Duane Vaughan '67, and thought it would be fun to continue in college. While the basketball dream didn't happen, Kappa Sigma did instead, and the opportunity had a positive impact on Steve's college life, bringing him many fond memories to look back on. "Most of my favorite Kappa Sig memories are tied to my years living at the house on State Street, including learning to play bridge in the card room, exciting poker games in the basement, and trying to drown out the noises from 30 other Brothers all trying to get some shut eye on the sleeping porch," Steve said. Steve's Kappa Sigma Brothers were always there for him during college. He was always able to find a Brother to talk him through a physics problem or help him prepare for a test (that he had procrastinated studying for yet again). He looks back with pride on the Kappa Sigma experience where he learned so much. "The Fraternity taught us about being respectful, compassionate, humble, and polite. Pledges also learned the importance of cooperation as we worked together to develop a positive sense of camaraderie and worked as a team toward a common goal—these traits were helpful later in the business world," Steve said. Steve worked most of his career in the energy industry, starting with Cities Service Company Life Lessons from Beta-Chi Steve Malcolm '67 Reflects on Kappa Sigma Lessons and How He Supports the Brotherhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After 14 years with them in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Tulsa, he moved to The Williams Companies, where he worked for 27 years. In 2002, Steve was elected chairman of the board and CEO, retiring from the company in early 2011. Kappa Sigma always encouraged its Brothers to support the school and local community by volunteering to assist various service organizations and charities. Steve took this to heart when he joined Williams, which had "giving back to the community" as one of its core values and beliefs. During his tenure at Williams, he served on many local boards (sometimes as chairman), such as United Way, YMCA (local and national), OCCJ, and Tulsa University Board of Trustees. Steve continues to give back to the community through his support of Beta-Chi with the Scholastic Scholarship Program. He finds it rewarding to help those who need assistance so they can continue to thrive in the Fraternity. "I don't believe we had anything like that back when I was in school. I remember some people fell behind on paying their house bills, and I always felt sad that they were faced with that situation," Steve said. "I think it's money well spent to help those who need a few dollars to help them get through their time at school." Steve believes it is important for undergraduates to apply themselves and work hard. "There are a lot of good life lessons that one can get from their time in Kappa Sig; try to absorb those the best you can and give back to your community and school." Steve enjoys reading Beta Chi Columns to see what his Brothers are up to because it gives him an opening to reconnect. If he finds someone he knows, he takes the opportunity to reach out. Steve has been inducted in the Kappa Sigma Hall of Fame for his support of Beta-Chi. He married his high school sweetheart, Gwen, in 1970. They had a daughter, Rebecca, in 1979.
