Now tell me, what do you picture? Do you see a beautiful diamond, or a vibrant and electrifi ed colored stone, or an artful combination of silver and gold materials? Do you picture a stunning pearl necklace or a jaw-dropping ring on a perfectly manicured hand? Do you picture a woman? Do you picture a man? Jewelry is inherently and intimately intertwined with gender, yet except for watches, jewelry, broadly speaking is designed and marketed to women. In western society the traditional construct of gender and identity are being challenged and redefi ned. California Assembly Bill 1084 was recently signed into law requiring large retailers to have non-gendered toy sections starting in 2024. This poses the challenging question as to the role of gender will play in the jewelry industry in the future. In the modern western world, the jewelry marketing machine has been laser focused on women. As gender constructs are being toppled so are the traditions of adornment and style. That focus is blurring as men are becoming more conscious of their individuality and their image. Men are quickly becoming consumers and collec- tors of jewelry outside of the watch category. Artists are creating collections for men that accent and complement masculinity rather than advertising it. Design that was considered traditionally masculine (skulls, bullets, car, etc.) is being supplanted by innovative and thoughtful pieces. While modern men's jewelry is designed for a man's body, it is not lost on the female form creating a sense of inclusivity. Watchmakers recognized the role of non-gendered sales early by offering the same design in a multitude of case sizes. Jewelry designers are evolving to recognize and celebrate gender as a concept and an identity. Take another moment and repeat the following word multiple times. JEWELRY Now tell me what you picture?
