Some say the great American scientist George Washington Carver invented peanut
butter. Others say it was invented in 1890 when St. Louis doctor Percy L. Crosby,
created it to give his patients an easy-to-digest, high-protein food. By early in the
second decade of the 1900s, there were dozens of companies making peanut butter.
Can you find the following
pictures hidden in the
peanut pile?
George Washington Carver was born a slave, but he
grew up to be one of America's greatest scientists. He
invented more than 300 products made from peanuts!
It was hard for a black
child to get into school
when George was
young. But he never
gave up. He eventually
finished school and got
a job as a teacher at a
school in Alabama.
He wanted to help poor
farmers. He told them to
grow peanuts. The
farmers thought peanut
plants were weeds.
George invited some
farmers to lunch. They
had soup, mock
chicken, creamed vegetables, bread, salad, ice cream,
cookies and coffee.
Imagine their surprise when George told them that
everything was made with peanuts!
