November 2021 beAt the betes issue November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and more and more people are being diagnosed with this often-preventable disease every year. Diabetes is currently the seventh leading cause of death in the United States—and studies show that deaths related to diabetes may be under- reported. Today, 1 in 10 U.S. adults has diabetes, and in Arkansas, that number is even higher, with 13.2% of adults 18 years of age and older diagnosed with diabetes last year. An additional 88 million U.S. adults – 1 in 3 – have prediabetes, which means their blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. Without intervention, many people with prediabetes could develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. With numbers like that, it's important to learn about this deadly disease and take action. That's why this issue of You at Your Best looks at ways to "Beat the Betes." 5 type 2 diabetes: Are you at risk? 8 Diabetes superfoods: Make these food "superstars" part of your healthy diet 4 Walk your way to diabetes control 5 Coping with a diabetes diagnosis 6 how a simple tape measure may help predict diabetes in black adults 7 Diabetic neuropathy 9 Diabetes prevention - understanding the role of insulin Washington regional endocrinology Clinic features contents President Brent A.
