Best of Fayetteville
Best Local Picnic Area
Mazarick Park
1400 Belvedere Ave.
910-433-1575 or www.fcpr.us/parks-trails/parks/mazarick-park
With enforced isolation
over the past year and a half,
Fayetteville residents have
embraced the outdoors more
than they ever have before.
Visits to local parks and green
spaces have allowed people to
take a deep breath, look up at
the sun and know that we are
all still okay. Mazarick has been
a perennial favorite in our Best
of competition, but it is also a
perennial favorite of Fayetteville
residents who are ready to put
work away, and just take some
time to breathe.
Mazarick Park is a multi-purpose park featuring a disc-golf course, picnic
shelters, a playground and trails. Additionally, the park offers tennis courts and a
baseball field, both of which are available for a quick game. But if you really want
to take the time to embrace the beauty of nature and wide open spaces instead
of the walls of your house, a family picnic or a romantic picnic could be just
what the doctor ordered.to cure you and your loved ones from the Covid blues.
The picnic areas are open to the public on a first come, first served basis
unless they are reserved. After eating, you can throw a blanket in the sun and
just enjoy the warmth of the sun or the blue of the skies. Or, if you are adventur-
ous, you can take a walk on the Glenville Lake Pier, which is open for fishing; you
must abide by state fishing license requirements. For more information on shel-
ter rentals, call 433-1547.

Cape Fear River Trail
631 Treetop Drive 910-433-1547

The Cape Fear River Trail is a per-
petual favorite and longtime winner
of these Best of Fayetteville titles. No
matter what brings you to the trail
— exercise, relaxation, communing
with nature, a brisk walk with your
human or canine friends — you will
be glad you came.
The trail features over 5 miles of
10-foot-wide paved one-way trails
through an amazing array of trees,
plants and wildlife. Walkers, run-
ners and bikers love the spectacular
views of the Cape Fear River. The
terrain ranges from flat to slightly
hilly. Signs along the trail explain
the wildlife and plant life.
In addition to the wooden bridges,
including one covered bridge,
there are more than 1,000 feet of
boardwalk through the marsh and
wetlands along the trail. Just under 3 miles of the Cape Fear Mountain Bike Trail
is now accessible off of the Cape Fear River Trail. It consists of two sections on
opposite sides of the trail.
Parking is available at both ends of the trail: the southern terminus at J. Bayard
Clark Park Nature Center, 631 Sherman Drive, and the northern terminus at
Jordan Soccer Complex, 445 Treetop Drive. Amenities include restrooms at both
ends of the trail, portable toilets along the trail, and benches, tables and security
call boxes. The trail is open 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to dusk.
