Once a Seahawk ... A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY 2021 FALL Dear Seabury Community, We ended the previous school year with a Stepping Up ceremony. Every student was in attendance. Every grade stepped up. Every graduate had the opportunity to get ridiculously hugged by the faculty. There were tears as well as laughter. It was exhausting—and wonderful—after such a difficult 2020. We begin this new school year with the excitement of new students and new opportunities as well as an enthusiastic rediscovering of learning, community, and tradition. In morning meetings, we once again gather to start the school day. Teachers are spending more time with their advisees this year, and we are more deliberately invoking the original name of these gatherings—Altera Familia—as we feel the importance of renewing these other families. Another exciting activity back in place: lunches! In the first week, our students gathered around tables in our new commons, and when I looked around and could see the faces of my students (some of them for the first time after a year), I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. How I missed those faces! In other recent news, we welcomed parents for Curriculum Night, our seniors inaugurated their final year with a retreat at Mr. Gollier's barn, and Mr. Nelson entertained us with his usual "Get to Know a New Kid" contest. We are also preparing for dances, pumpkin-carving contests, alumni visits, Christmas tree excursions, music concerts, and school trips. We begin the school year not certain what challenges we may encounter in the months ahead, but with a powerful sense of certainty that we will stand up to those obstacles. We all have developed humility in the face of a changing tomorrow, but we are determined to explore and grow and live. It is not enough to be resilient now. We must embrace joy—and one another. This year, we will be SEAHAWKS! Yours respectfully, Dr. Don Schawang Head of School Embracing the New Year—and One Another Seabury Traditis and Culture (Continued on page 2) Also called "tutorial" or "advising," this involves a group of students of various ages and a faculty member who meet to support each other throughout their years at Seabury. Altera Familia (Other Family) Seabury Aucti Seabury's main fundraising event for the year, held in February. It's so special when the whole community participates! Cla Form Trips Each grade goes on a special overnight trip for educational value and class bonding. A Seabury favorite!
