Thursday, September 23-September 29, 2021 www.rutherfordweekly.com 828-248-1408 Rutherford Weekly - Page 21 In May, two artists from Preserving a Picturesque America (PAPA) set out on an 80-mile journey along the French Broad River to recreate some of the original artwork from the fi rst Picturesque America publication in the 19th century. That artwork is now going on display. Artist Mike "Sketch" Wurman and PAPA founder Scott "Doc" Varn embarked on the 80-mile, 2-week trek following in the footsteps and brushstrokes of the original Picturesque America artist Harry Fenn. The original route mostly followed the Drovers road and the famed Buncombe Turnpike of the 1800s. By retracing the steps of the original artist, artists were able to fi nd locations featured in the original Picturesque America serials. Photos of the adventure and the original sketches at each of the 12 vantage points will all be on display with the organization's Fall Art Show, "Footsteps & Brushstrokes", hosted by the Wedge at Foundation's Cloud Room in Asheville's River Arts District. The display began on September 16 and continues through October 27. There will be three separate collections, each on display for two weeks. Chimney Rock is featured in the fi rst collection, on display until September 29. More than 30 artists from western North Carolina helped create the artwork that will be displayed at the show. Some of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the organizations preserving the natural locations where the artwork was done. A portion of the proceeds from "Chimney Rock," a watercolor painting by Sandra Moore (pictured), will directly benefi t the Friends of Chimney Rock State Park.
