Speakers for this session were: ● Peoria Mayor and League Presi- dent Cathy Carlat ● National League of Cities Presi- dent and Lexington Councilmember Kathy Maness ● Host Mayor, City of Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego oKeynote speaker Dr. Rick Rigsby ● A general luncheon on Thurs- day, September 2. The annual lun- cheon featured: ● Presentation of the 2021 League Legislative Awards, honoring local government supporters from the state legislature. ● Presentation of the 2021 League Service Award Winners, honoring mayors and council members who have served in offi ce for eight, 12, 16, 20 years and more. gave their support. After everyone spoke, I thanked everyone for being such a big part of the remembrance ceremony. Preacher from the VFW gave the closing prayer and Taps was played. Following the ceremony attendees were able to ring the bells in honor of lives lost on September 11, 2001. Also a huge thank you to Nicci Col- lier and Public Works for all your hard work. By the way, be sure to check out the monuments if you haven't seen them. The Ohlsen family from Colo- rado who did the block building is coming back in November to put the stucco on and then we can add all the items that will go on each one. We need to have several fundraisers over the winter to hopefully get the things we want, including plaques, etc. We plan to have a big dedica- tion ceremony on March 5th, 2022, for our next Heroes Appreciation Day in Quartzsite!! Be sure to come and support this project. It's going to be awesome to see it fi nished and landscaped. I am so proud!! ● 15th Annual Youth Program wel- comed nearly 200 youth delegates from cities and towns throughout the state. Delegates participated in sessions and activities planned specifi cally for youth interested in local government. They also had opportunities to interact with local elected offi cials, network with other youth delegates and learn about is- sues and challenges facing Arizona. ● More than 30 educational ses- sions on topics ranging from funda- mentals of local government such as council-manager relations and legislative issues, to sessions on water, recycling, economic develop- ment and short-term rentals. ● For a full list of sessions and other conference events, visit: http://leagueaz.org/e/21ac/ In addition to the many educa- tional sessions and networking events at the conference, mayors and councilmembers from across the state met during the event to develop resolutions for the League's Municipal Policy Statement. The policy statement represents the col- lective interests of cities and towns statewide and will guide the League of Arizona Cities and Town's lobby- ing efforts during the upcoming leg- islative session that begins in Janu- ary 2022. Next year's League conference will be held in Glendale, August 30 – September 2, 2022. It provides policy and legislative advocacy, informa- tion and inquiry services, along with publications and educational pro- grams to strengthen the quality and effi ciency of municipal government.
