Please visit our Instagram account, @saeindiana, for all your up-to-date Gamma Chapter news! I was taken aback when I learned last spring that Gamma was saddled with a long list of sanctions. It was only a few years earlier that I met a number of undergraduate brothers at a tailgate and was incredibly impressed by their manners and maturity. It made me proud to be an ΣAE. When I learned about the circumstances that led to the sanctions, I was disappointed but also reminded of just how fragile the culture of a fraternity is and how quickly it can change, for worse, or fortunately, for better. I would not have expected myself to take on the role of chapter advisor, but inspired by my pledge brother, Jason Kennedy and the pandemic providing me the opportunity to be on the ground in Bloomington, it was a challenge that I am glad I accepted. I have taken away much more from my experience than I could have ever imagined. 1) It takes patience and understanding (and a good sense of humor) to be an advisor to young men going through the growing years of learning to be on their own. 2) These young men want and appreciate the guidance and support from alumni but you have to take the time to earn their trust. 3) The chapters that flourish have active alumni engagement. The chapters that flounder, do not. I am proud of what the young brothers accomplished during a challenging year and feel good about the foundation that has been laid for brighter days ahead. I also recognize that without an increase in the level of alumni engagement, all of our efforts could go by the wayside. I hope you will consider stepping up, like a True Gentlemen, and give your most precious asset, your time, to the young brothers.
