Photo by Andy Shupe, Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Monthly Social Events there is much fun to be had in the classroom, but it's important to have fun and connect with one another beyond the classroom. our social committee hosts several events throughout the year that build camaraderie and community among our members. social events are open to anyone who would like to attend but an rsvP is requested. event dates, times and locations are shared on our website and in weekly e-newsletters. lUnCh with aUthors anD others each month an author or other interesting speaker will give a short program followed by conversation at enriching, informative and convivial luncheons. this dutch-treat lunch is held the third thursday of each month. happy hoUr Connect with new and old friends at our fun fi lled happy hour gatherings! held the fourth thursday of each month at varying locations. Special Interest Groups (SIG) special interest groups are a chance for members to focus on one particular area of interest beyond what is off ered in classes. for more information, or to join or start a sig, contact the olli offi ce. the following sig's are currently being off ered each month. olli membership is required to participate in a sig. CUrrent eVents DisCUssion groUp What's the news of today? this sig meets to discuss interesting, controversial, newsworthy and fun topics that are streaming the headlines. group members, on a volunteer basis, choose, present, and facilitate discussion on topics of local, state, national and foreign interest. nonFiCtion BooK ClUB if you enjoy reading good books and discussing it among like-minded readers then this is the group for you! group members select books that relate directly to topics of general interest such as political history, economic policy, environmental issues, or controversial public fi gures. olli members who may be interested in such topics are invited to take part in the monthly discussion sessions. staying CUrrent on China this sig meets monthly, for one hour sessions, to review and discuss current events relating to China – with a special focus on their impact in the united states. the group's objective is to gain a greater understanding of the Chinese culture and the objectives of the Chinese government. no prior knowledge or experience with the subject is required. a walK in the parKs starting this fall, we will meet periodically for a leisurely social walk in a diff erent city park each week. the meet ups will be an opportunity to enjoy a brown bag lunch while learning about nature with like minded individuals. Walks are about 25-30 minutes and lunch, about 40 minutes, plus a restroom stop.
