What are the im- plications for how we interact with them? in this brief course, ed Minar, Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and dog trainer / roommate to three australian shep- herds, will look at what dogs are and at recent developments in dog science, with the hope of gaining insight into how best to live and flourish alongside our best friends. instruCtor: Dr. ed Minar dAY/dAte: friday, 11/19/21 - (1) tiMe: 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM ForMAt: in-Person LoCAtion: PC Cost: $19.00 olli Member $34.00 non-olli Member Written in tHe rings desCriPtion: Most temperate trees put on a single ring each year, a fact known since the Middle ages. these rings help tell us how old the tree is, but did you know that these rings encode information about climate, fire, insects and other influences? Dr. Malcolm Cleaveland specializes in the use of tree rings to reconstruct paleoclimate. he will discuss how the variability forms unique patterns that can be used to date historic timbers and en - vironmental events. learn how the dating is done and explore the many applications. instruCtor: Malcolm Cleaveland dAY/dAte: Mondays, 11/29/21 - 12/6/21 (2) tiMe: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM ForMAt: in-Person LoCAtion: Drake Cost: $29.00 olli Member $44.00 non-olli Member WHAt on eArtH is tHe ortHodox CHurCH? desCriPtion: the ancient eastern or- thodox Church is largely unknown in nW ar- kansas, and this course will give an inquirer a basic understanding of the Church's his- tory and way of thinking. fr. Join Dr. t.a. "Mac" Mcgilvery, adjunct Professor of geoscience at the university of arkansas, as he presents an overview of the geology of arkansas. he will discuss the five physiographic provinces that make up the state and will examine the large-scale tectonic forces and surface geology. the combination of bedrock types and tectonic history has had a significant impact on the cultural and eco - nomic development of our state. geology is all around us and this course will provide an appreciation for this observation. instruCtor: t. a. But how did fayetteville's housing come to be such a scarce commodity? and why is workforce housing im- portant to the economic wellbeing of our com- munity? this class will explore the key events which have come to impact the availability and affordability of fayetteville's housing, starting with an examination of federal budget cuts to education and housing in the 1980s which impacted both the City and university. univer- sity enrollment trends, student housing, state funding reductions, and the City's key plan- ning documents will be reviewed. the class will examine the pros and cons of current de- velopment trends designed to help meet the demands of a growing community. and finally, Mike Wiederkehr, member of the fayetteville Planning Commission, will seek positive input and opinions from class participants on how best to meet the future housing needs of our growing population. While this class is not an outlet to complain about growth, it will be an opportunity to realistically examine how we got here, and how we might forge a produc- tive community path forward. instruCtor: Mike Wiederkehr dAY/dAte: Wednesdays, 12/1/21 - 12/15/21 (3) tiMe: 10:30 aM - 12:00 PM ForMAt: in-Person LoCAtion: Mt. seq Cost: $25.00 olli Member $40.00 non-olli Member reMote sensing And HistoriCAL reseArCH At AFriCAn AMeriCAn CeMeteries in nortHWest ArKAnsAs desCriPtion: archeologist, Jami lock- hart, offers olli participants a presentation that illustrates partnerships and methods being used to fill gaps in our knowledge of african american history in northwest ar- kansas. the research examines past cultural landscapes both within and between specific african american cemeteries in the fayette- ville area. archival research is supported by the interpretation of aerial and ground-based remote sensing to precisely locate historical features at multiple sites. integrated tech- nologies will include ground penetrating ra- dar, magnetometry, electrical resistivity, light detection and ranging (liDar), digitized his- torical maps and photos, global positioning (gPs), and geographic information systems (gis) mapping. instruCtor: Dr. Jami J. lockhart dAY/dAte: Wednesday, 12/1/21 - (1) tiMe: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ForMAt: in-Person LoCAtion: Drake Cost: $19.00 olli Member $34.00 non-olli Member visuALiZing Long Lost tiMes in tHe nAturAL stAte desCriPtion: our journey starts with two unique views of the deep past.
