Hastings will replace Fuchia Allen, who resigned April 1, and will assume duties on Monday, August 2nd. Hastings is very familiar with the fair, broadcasting “live” from the event for the past 26 years on various local radio stations. “It’s a job that has always intrigued me” said Hastings and now he is thrilled to serve at its helm. Born on a dairy farm, Hastings knows hard work and the importance of agriculture in our area. From milking cows before head- ing to school to putting up hay and cutting silage, Hastings knows the ins and outs of life on the farm. With a history of being the largest county agricultural fair in the State, Hastings plans to rely on his farming roots to continue the tradition. Hastings has a very extensive broadcasting career with over 35 years of experience. He has worked in various positions with local radio stations and is currently serving as General Manager of WOHS 1390 in Shelby. She’s telling us she is number one and a future Little Miss Casar! Out and about with her parents Justin and Cassandra Sisk at a family cookout , one year old Ma- kayka defi nitely gets our vote as a beauty queen. Keep Shelby Beau- tiful (KSB) says “THANK YOU” to the Scouts from Pack 101 who par- ticipated in a litter cleanup project on Saturday, July 17 in uptown Shel- by. An impressive display and a great fi nd at the 11th an- nual Kings Mountain BeachBlast was this awesome “can art” booth that featured over a hundred aluminum can planes. The planes were only $10 each and are cre- ated and sold by Roger Craig from Iron Station, N. C. Hastings has served as president of the Cherryville Rotary Club and served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Gaston County United Way and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Cleveland County Council on Aging. In 2001, he was named to the Cherryville Sports Hall of Fame for sports broadcasting. He and his wife, Terresa, reside on Moss Lake in Cleveland County. Hastings is a member of the Hephzibah A.R.P. Presbyterian Church in Bessemer City. The Scouts conducted a litter sweep of several blocks of the up- town area streets and alley ways. The Cubmaster of Pack 101, Don Wilson, organized the litter sweep and KSB provided the cleanup materials and bottled water for the Scouts. Pack 101 is sponsored by First Baptist Church of Shel- by. Pictured are Scouts from Pack 101 who participated in the July 17th litter cleanup. Hastings is excited and eager to start work. With the annual fair less than nine weeks away, he plans to hit the mid-way running. Once this year’s fair leaves town, Hastings will work closely with the Fair Association to plan future events and activities. The fair webpage and Facebook sites are currently being updated. The public is encouraged to use these avenues to share their ideas and suggestions. Does Your Pet Need Spayed, Neutered Or Vaccinated? Jay was home two days later. He needed to participate in four more games to qualify for the Little League All-Stars. Jay was very weak but determined to play. He did and qualifi ed! Four weeks later, his parents took him to Duke Hos- pital for another 16 hour operation to remove more of the tumor. After this event, there was more dis- heartening news. Chris and Pam were told to “take him home . . . he’ll be dead in six months!” Nei- ther would accept the diagnosis and declared “we don’t believe it!” Jay was now very weak. The only thing he wanted to eat was Fruit Loops, which he ate a lot of! He had to learn to walk again. The tumor was sent to Mayo Clinic to be analyzed. It was astro-sutoma slow growing brain stem tumor. Unfortunately, tests revealed that it was growing again. Then something strange, but very wonderful happened. Jay’s dad, Chris, works for BMW, which publishes a newsletter for company employees. Pam woke up around 2 a.m. in the morning because she could not sleep and started reading the newsletter. The story re- lated how Dr, Weisoff of New York University, one of the best neuro- surgeons in the world, had helped the girl. The story inspired Pam, and led them to call Dr. Weisoff to arrange an appointment for Jay. They took him to New York. After the examination, Dr. Weisoff told them not to have any more op- erations. He said Jay was lucky to have survived the two operations. His recommendation was radia- tion, hoping to curtail any growth and possibly put the situation in remission. Back home, his parents took him to Charlotte, again and again, for radiation treatments. In all there were 36 trips and 36 treatments! Jay was exhausted and slept all the way home. To ev- eryone’s amazement he insisted on playing on the basketball team. The love of sports in him displays his determination and strength of purpose. This young man loves sports and has been given the nickname by his friends - “Jay- bird”! The radiation seems to have worked.
