With Disney+ about to debut a series version of "Turner & Hooch" (on Friday, July 16), it's a fine time for the streaming service to be showing the original 1989 movie that helped Tom Hanks build his big-screen cred. He's typically engaging as Scott Turner, a small-town California police detective about to transfer to a bigger city when he lands a major case ... and a new pet. Hooch is a murder victim's dog who saw the killing, and Turner appeals to a veterinarian (a pleasant Mare Winningham) to help him mind the canine. Expectedly, man and dog bond, resulting in entertaining fare that leaves little wonder Disney is revisiting the concept now. The film comes from Roger Spottiswoode, a director whose work has been all over the map (the war drama "Under Fire," the James Bond adventure "Tomorrow Never Dies," etc.), but he also fares nicely with this genre.
