Alex Sanford, the head golf pro at the Highlands, has been planning ways to keep them all happy. The tournament season starts each year with the Sweetheart Open in Feb - ruary and usually ends with the Veteran's Day tour- nament in November. In between are charity tour- naments, competitive club championships, fun tour- naments like the Super- intendent's Revenge and traditional tournaments like All in The Family, in which contestants return year after year. "We set up our program to include as many types of golfers as we can," Sandford said. Fairly new to the schedule is the Par - ent-Child Championship. Parents can play with children as young as six and some parents play with multiple children. This year the Parent-Child Tournament is scheduled for August 14 at Brittany. The next weekend is for golfers at the other end of the spectrum, The Senior Men's Championship on Aug. 21 and 22 has a mini - mum age of 50 and a flight for "Legends" who are over 75. In April, another newish entry on the tournament calendar was played on the Highlands Golf Course. "Shot in the Dark" was played with glow-in-the- dark balls after a cookout. The nine-hole tournament raised funds for the high school golf teams in the area. The POA sponsors some charity tournaments in - cluding the Folds of Honor in August, Alzheimer's Golf Classic, also in Au- gust, Prostate Cancer in September, and Rally in Pink in November. Many other groups, like the Can- cer Challenge, run their own tournaments on POA courses. There are three tourna- ments to benefit the cours- es themselves. Organized by the "Friends" groups, Scotsdale, The Highlands and both courses at Met- field will benefit. This will be the fifth year that golf pros will play in Bella Vista. The Bella Vista Charity Classic will bring players associated with the APT and the WAPT to Bella Vita. Everyone can watch the matches for free and on June 22, there's a chance to play with the pros at the ProAm match. The American Junior Golf Association is return - ing in September. After winning awards for the first "Stacy Lewis Junior Open" in 2012, that tournament moved to Rogers the next year. This year the young golfers will return to the Highlands. Sanford said member's suggestions are often the way new tournaments get on the schedule. He's hap - py when the tournaments get more golfers out on the courses.
