Hey kids! Here's a great way to use all
your broken pieces of sidewalk chalk,
turning them into sidewalk chalk paint!
YOU'LL NEED:
• Sidewalk chalk - broken and/or
water-soaked pieces of chalk will
work
• 1-quart freezer bags
• Rubber mallet or hammer
• Container for water
• Water
• Old muffin tins or recycled
containers (yogurt, cottage cheese,
and sour cream containers)
• Paintbrushes
• Stick for stirring
instructions
1. Collect all your small broken pieces
of chalk. You can also use new
sidewalk chalk if you don't have
enough broken pieces.
2. Sort the sidewalk chalk by color
and put pieces into muffin tin
sections or other containers.
3. Put each color into a separate
freezer bag.
4. This is the fun part: using your
rubber mallet or hammer, smash
the sidewalk chalk until it's
powder.
5. Put your chalk powder into the
muffin tin or recycled containers,
one color in each compartment or
container
6. Pour water into the chalk powder
one color at a time. Mix with a
paintbrush or chopstick while
you are pouring. Your chalk
paint should be the consistency
of pancake batter. Start with less
water than you think and add
more if needed. If your chalk paint
is too thin, crush up some more
sidewalk chalk and add it to the
chalk paint to thicken.
7. Let your chalk paint sit for about
30-60 minutes. Stir it up before
you paint with it.
8. Keep water nearby in a pitcher to
add to the paint, because it may
thicken as you use it.
9. It'e best to use this paint flat
surfaces like driveways, sidewalks,
and playgrounds. It will run on
vertical surfaces like fences or
walls.
10. Create your masterpiece!
