But local health advocates are encouraging residents to kick the soda can and replace sweetened drinks with healthy alternatives. Frequent consumption of sugar sweetened beverages may cause greater weight gain and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Encourage your children to make the simple change of replacing sweetened drinks with a healthy alternative each day for better health. Water is a great choice! An individual serving soda used to be 8 ounces but now it is more commonly 24 ounces, adding a whopping 600 extra calories to our daily diets. A 20 ounce can of cola has 17 teaspoons of sugar! Pile 17 teaspoons of sugar on a plate to show your child just how much sugar a single can of soda can have. Health Advocates Urge Families to Choose Healthy Drinks Like learning how to play a guitar or swing a bat, learning how to read takes practice. The more a child reads, the better he/she gets. It's that simple. Along the way, young readers need coaches, like you the parent! Help them through rough spots and cheer their successes. READING PRACTICE: The ability to read accurately and quickly is called "fluency." An easy way to help your child's fluency is to listen to him/her read the same pages repeatedly until all the "bumps in the road" get smoothed out. Reading favorite books out loud over and over again is a great way to get that fluency practice! E D I T O R ' S P I C K by Vicki Whiting, Kid Scoop News By Julie Andrews Edwards The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles he Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles was written by Julie Andrews, the beloved star of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. This book captured my nine-year old's attention and imagination and it was the first chapter book he read cover to cover without any encouragement from me. It is also a great read-aloud! The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals—the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun"—apart from and forgotten by people. But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland. Only by skill and determination were the four travelers able to discover the last of the really great Whangdoodles and grant him his heart's desire.
