We enjoyed the perks of a full social calendar, living in the Chapter House, and forming enduring friendships with brothers, being a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon meant having the resources to build our futures—including a built- in network of alumni. Connecting with alumni is one of the best ways for collegiate members to prepare for their careers, and universities across the nation promote alumni mentoring programs. Alumni mentorship can lead to job offers and crucial career advice, as well as give our brothers the confidence they need to take on the workforce. WHAT MAKES A GOOD MENTOR? Faculty advisors are great support systems for our members, but our alumni are in a unique position to help. We've been in their shoes already. We understand the rigorous academic standards of our university and we know how to balance school and the fraternity. The network Kansas Beta Chapter provides is invaluable as undergraduates navigate their way from the classroom to board room. But mentorship isn't only for collegians. All of us know brothers who started their careers through an alumni connection. Whether writing a letter of recommendation or sharing a job opening on our Facebook page, we can help each other advance in our professions. ALUMNI VOLUNTEER CORPORATION Members of the Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) currently serve as alumni mentors to our chapter officers. These partnerships help guide the undergraduate chapter leaders in addressing day to day tasks in their respective officer roles, but also in determining long-term goals for the chapter. HOW CAN I BE A MENTOR? Mentorship doesn't have to be a huge time commitment. You can serve on the Alumni Volunteer Corporation as an advisor, attend a Chapter meeting in person or virtually to share career advice and experiences, or simply share your email with undergraduates to be a resource for those interested in your field of work. No matter the level of commitment, knowing you're furthering the future of our Chapter and its members is immeasurably rewarding. If you're interested in giving back to SigEp, reach out to AVC President Joe Morgan '92 at jtmorgan0399@gmail.com or (913) 424-0374 for more information. "I initially joined because of the solid people I met who appeared to share some of the same values I held," Jerry said. "I have stayed involved with the brotherhood because the friendships I made during my time at K-State far exceeded what I could have ever imagined." During his time as an active member, Jerry learned a lot about himself through the diversity that surrounded him at Kansas Beta, as his era was filled with individuals of different personalities and backgrounds.
